Musikverein is the home of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
Wiener Philharmoniker
- Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1848 as the
first professional orchestra in Vienna. While it is proud
of its democratic structure it has taken the orchestra 155
years to get used to the idea of women taking an active role
as philharmonic musicians. The first female was accepted in
1997 - a step, that the like-minded institution of the Spanish
Riding School has yet to take!
The 'Wiener Philharmoniker' have collaborated
with exceptional composers like Mozart,
Beethoven and Haydn. The distinctly
Viennese sound is guaranteed by the choice of instruments:
Viennese woodwinds, brass instruments and strings vary slightly
from their international counterparts. Vibrato is used only
sparingly and mostly by strings.
One of the highlights of Vienna's
cultural calendar is the 'Neujahrskonzert'
of the Vienna Philharmonic. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
is considered to be one of the best world-wide.
