Skiing within city limits of Austria's capital and easily reachable
with public transport. No problem, if you come to Vienna:
HOHE WAND-WIESE
Did you know that Vienna is the only capital
in the world that has seen a FIS (International Ski Federation)
World Cup Race within its city borders? For 38 years "Hohe
Wand Wiese" has served as first address for Viennese winter
sports aficionados. See
for yourself!
The piste is 400 m long and is served by
a t-bar lift. The slope has a maximum incline of 25%! It features
snow cannons and flood lights 'Hohe Wand Wiese' and allows
therefore for night-time skiing! During the week, the slopes
are open till 9:30 p.m., on weekends till 10 p.m.. Season lasts
from the day before Christmas (Dec 23rd) until March, depending
on weather and temperature.
In 1966, the excellent results of the Austrian
ski-team during the Olympic Games in Cortina (Italy) triggered euphoric
public interest in skiing. The Viennese major decided it was time
to open a skiing piste in Vienna. Hohe Wand Wiese was designed to
meet FIS-guidelines and accordingly the piste became a location
for skiing races of international calibre.
In 1967, the first parallel slalom ever
attracted many visitors. A parallel slalom is especially fascinating
as you can watch 2 skiers compete at the same time on parallel slopes.
After many successful races, Hohe Wand Wiese staged its last FIS-World
Cup slalom in 1986. Unforgettable skiing stars like Marc Giradelli
(LUX) and Ingmar Stenmark (SWE) competed in this night time race.
Flood lights assured adequate lighting for skiiers and more than
10.000 fans.
"Hohe Wand Wiese" is situated
within city limits and can be reached by public transport. If you
can't but want to ski, no problem
there's a skiing school.
