1. Which requirements do I have to satisfy to take part in a German course?

No previous knowledge is required for our German courses. Everyone is welcome. We offer German courses for every ability group. Your ability will be determined by means of a written and oral assessment test.

2. Is there any special form of dress at the school?

No special clothing is required. You can dress as casually as you like.

3. Can I take a German course even if I am a total beginner?

We can recommend our German courses even for total beginners who do not know a word of German! Our tutors are trained to teach beginners and since our colleagues and host families are used to foreign students there are hardly any difficulties outside of lessons. Courses for total beginners start once a month.

4. Can 15 year-olds attend courses at the ActiLingua Academy?

For adults aged 16 or above we offer German courses at ActiLingua Academy in the heart of Vienna. In special cases, we accept students aged 15 so long as the parent or legal guardian confirms in writing that they accept unlimited responsibility for the young person for the full duration of his/her stay. In the summer, there are special junior courses for 12 to 17 year-olds at our summer school in Vienna’s city centre. For students aged 16 to 19 years we can recommend our holiday course.

5. How many course levels are there?

ActiLingua offers German courses for seven different course levels all year round: Beginners, Elementary 1, Elementary 2, Elementary 3, Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2 and Advanced. Each course level involves 20 lessons of tuition per week and takes four to eight weeks to complete.

6. How is my course level determined?

The course level is determined according to the results of a written and oral assessment test. The written assessment test takes approximately 60 minutes to complete and covers grammar, reading comprehension and writing skills. It is automatically enclosed with the booking documents when a booking is made. Participants also have the possibility to take the assessment test online after registration. The assessment test needs to arrive at our office on Monday prior to course start. If you take it after arrival it might happen that you miss class on Monday.
An oral assessment takes place in the course of your welcome and registration on Monday, your first day at ActiLingua.

7. If I feel that I have been put in the wrong group, can I change the course level?

If you feel that the level is too high or too low, then please discuss the situation with your course coordinator. You will then be moved to the a more suitable level.

8. My German is already very good. Can I profit from a German course?

Throughout the year, ActiLingua offers German courses which cater to all levels from beginner to advanced. Our advanced courses include literary, socio-political, cultural and business related themes, and help to develop a very high command of German still further.

9. What level of German do I have to have in order to begin on a date other than the dates for beginners?

To start on another date than the dates for beginners, you should have some understanding of basic structures and a limited vocabulary. You should be able to answer very simple questions spoken slowly. If you know the present tense verb forms of ‘gehen’, ‘kommen’, ‘sprechen’, ‘arbeiten’ and ‘schreiben’, are able to introduce yourself in German or ask for the directions of the train stations, you are likely not an absolute beginner.

If you are unsure about your German proficiency, we recommend that you book your course for a beginners date. Then you can be sure to be placed in the appropriate level. If this is not possible, please contact us, so that we can work out an individual solution!
