School Year in Austria
A school year abroad represents an unforgettable experience. You
will meet new friends, such as teachers, schoolmates from your class
and your language course, host siblings and neighbours. You will
discover the tradition and culture of a foreign country and will
have fun with your new friends during study sessions, excursions
and physical exercise.
Vienna: Feel at home in the heart of Europe
Austria is not only beautiful and appealing, it is also one of
the safest countries in the world. Its capital Vienna offers an
exceptional quality of life, is green, safe and multifaceted. A
reliable public transport system connects famous sights like St.
Stephans cathedral, Belvedere and Schönbrunn castle,
house Hundertwasser and takes you from your accommodation to ActiLingua
Academy and later to your school. In your free time you discover
the city, go to the movies, to a concert, visit Viennese Prater
or work out at your sport club.
Participation requirements
- Age when starting school: 16-18 years.
- You decide on the duration of your German course depending on
your previous knowledge of German (at least 9
weeks). When you start school you should have very good knowledge
of German on the level “Mittelstufe”.
- You should have at least average school grades and bring along
good personal motivation and maturity.
- Knowledge of Latin, English and French makes it
easier to choose in Austria an appropriate high school. If you
do not have any knowledge of the required languages, you can still
attend a secondary school as a "guest student". In this case,
you will not receive a grade in the subjects in question.

language or Latin; History; Geography; Mathematics; Biology; Chemistry;
Physics; Computer science; Psychology and philosophy; Musical education;
Art; Sports; Religion.
Duration of school attendance
School attendance is available for 5 or 10 months or longer after
your German course with ActiLingua Academy.
School leaving exam in Austria
Taking the school leaving examination/ university entrance qualification
(Matura = Abitur) is especially important if you wish to study at
an Austrian or German university.
To pass the final examination, sound knowledge of German
and appropriate school results are required.
Only regular students (= you must have attended classes
and have received grades in all compulsory subjects) can take the
final examination.
If you intend to take the Matura, you ought to start school
in the penultimate (eleventh) year. Most schools do not admit
new students into the final (twelfth) year.
School attendance confirmation
After successful school attendance, you receive a certificate from
the Austrian school with a general assessment of your performance
asnd a confirmation of attendance.
Application
Please fill in the application
form for the school programme and submit it to us. Please apply
at least three months before school begins. The German course
can start shortly after your booking. You have to make a deposit of
EUR 198 together with the application.
Admission to the programme
For registration with the high school, please send us the following
documents:
- Copy of the school report of the last school year completed
in the home country, stating subjects and grades (in German translation)
- Copies of birth certificate and certificate of nationality
Visa
Most of our students have little trouble getting a visa for their
stay in Austria. EU citizens and citizens of Island, Liechtenstein,
Norway and Switzerland do not need a visa at all. Citizens of some
countries need to apply for a visa for stays longer than three months.
Citizens of some countries (esp. Turkey, Russia and CIS-states) may
find it difficult to get a visa for stays longer than 3 months. In
this case, we recommend that you come to Austria for 3 months at first,
return to your country and then come back for a second study period.
Detailed information please find on our information sheet "Visa
Information".
