Belvedere Castle (including a visit to the museum)

Belvedere Barockschloss Belvedere castle equals Schönbrunn in beauty and historic importance. It was built for prince Eugen, an eminent figure of Austrian history even though he was no Habsburg offspring and not even Austrian.
Hardly any other building offers comparable insights into the architecture of the baroque era and into the particularities of Austrian baroque architecture. Lower Belvedere houses the Austrian Baroque Museum, Upper Belvedere spectacularly displays the most famous paintings by Klimt, Kokoschka and Schiele. It was there, in the ceremonial rooms of the Upper Belvedere, that the treaty of 1955 was signed which re-established Austrian sovereignty after World War II.
