This half-day excursion offers insights into two poles
of Viennese reality: We will meet in "Heiligenstadt",
a district in Vienna’s north. There we will visit "Karl-Marx-Hof",
a complex of impressive and revolutionary working class housing
built in the 1930s. We will learn a lot about a fascinating
albeit tragic period of Viennese history. The years from 1919
to 1938 were determined by inflation, unemployment, civil war
and 'Austrofaschismus' (austro fascism).
Afterwards we will move on to 'Kahlenberg' passing
noble villas and romantic vineyards on our way. In 1683 the
slopes of 'Kahlenberg' were the setting for an eminent battle.
Supported by the Polish king Jan III. Sobieski the Viennese
defeated the Ottomans and ended a siege lasting for over three
month.
After visiting the chapel in which Sobieski prayed before battle
and enjoying the panoramic view over Vienna we have earned our
break at a traditional vine tavern – a Heurigen.
