Schönbrunn Castle - Feeling like the Empress

In the west of Vienna within easy distance from the centre (a couple of minutes by tube) you will find Schönbrunn castle, agrand-scale baroque residence second to none but Versailles itself. Ever since the reign of Empress Maria Theresia the castle has been the main residence of the Habsburg family in Vienna.
An extensive baroque park stretches behind the castle with the Gloriette at its highest point. The Gloriette was built as a monument to the glorious victories of Maria Theresia’s army against Prussia. Today, it was converted into a coffee shop where you can take a refreshment and enjoy a marvellous view over the west of Vienna.
Part of the attraction of Schönbrunn is its spacious zoo. The keeping of the animals is state of the art which makes it hard to believe that Vienna’s zoo was the first of its kind: It was founded as early as 1752. After an informative tour of the park it is up to you: you can either visit the zoo or inspect the magnificent apartments and parlours of Imperial couple Franz Joseph and Sissi with the support of an audio guide. Tough choice? You can always do both!
