No special clothing is required. You can dress as casually as you like.

Courses for total beginners start once a month.

For adults aged 16 or above we offer German courses at ActiLingua Academy in the heart of Vienna. In special cases, we accept students aged 15 as long as the parent or legal guardian confirms in writing that they accept unlimited responsibility for the young person for the full duration of his/her stay. In summer, there are special junior courses for 12 to 17 year-olds at our Summer School in Vienna’s city centre. For students aged 16 to 19 years we can recommend our Holiday Course.

ActiLingua offers German courses for eight different course levels all year round: A1, A2.1, A2.2, B1.1, B1.2, B2, C1 and C2. Each course level involves 20 lessons of tuition per week and takes four to eight weeks to complete.

The course level is determined according to the results of a written and oral assessment test. The written assessment test takes approximately 60 minutes to complete and covers grammar, reading comprehension and writing skills. It is automatically enclosed with the booking confirmation when a booking is made. Participants also have the possibility to take the assessment test online after registration. The assessment test needs to arrive at our office on Monday prior to course start at the latest. If you take it after arrival it might be possible that you miss class on Monday.
An oral assessment takes place on Monday, your first day at ActiLingua.

If you feel that the level is too high or too low, then please discuss the situation with your course coordinator. You will then be moved to the suitable level.

Throughout the year, ActiLingua offers German courses which cater to all levels from beginner to advanced. Our advanced courses include literary, socio-political, cultural and business related topics and help to develop a very high command of German.

To start on another date than the dates for beginners, you should have some understanding of basic structures and a limited vocabulary. You should be able to answer very simple questions spoken slowly. If you know the present tense verb forms of ‘gehen’, ‘kommen’, ‘sprechen’, ‘arbeiten’ and ‘schreiben’, are able to introduce yourself in German or ask for the directions of the train stations, you are likely not an absolute beginner.

If you are unsure about your German proficiency, we recommend that you book your course for a beginners date. Then you can be sure to be placed in the appropriate level. If this is not possible, please contact us, so that we can work out an individual solution!

The language of instruction is German. Our tutors use special methods to teach the German language to complete beginners. No other foreign language skills are necessary.

Our classes are small, international groups with an average of eight to a maximum of twelve students in Standard Courses, and an average of five to eight in Intensive Courses.

Our teachers see themselves as your friends and partners. They are native speakers of standard German and take a genuine pleasure in working together with you. All teachers are highly qualified, academically trained and regularly attend training courses held by ActiLingua.

Almost all of our teaching staff speak English and/or another foreign language - but not in the classroom. Only German is spoken in the lessons.

We provide books for the duration of the course free of charge. Should you wish to buy a copy of the book you can obtain a 50% discount at the school office.

If you only have time in the evening, we can offer you an individual course from 05:45 pm to 07:15 pm. There are group courses from 09:00 am to 12:15 pm or from 02:15 pm to 05:30 pm.

Sixty percent of our students are university students aged between 17 and 30 seeking to improve their German language skills and awareness of Austrian culture as a supplement to their academic studies. Thirty percent are already working, with ages ranging from 25 to 65. Eight percent are business managers and executives of different nationalities. Two percent are retired and wish to improve their German and familiarize themselves with Austrian culture. We hold separate courses for juniors aged 12-17 years during the summer months at our Summer School. For young adults, we can recommend our Holiday Course 16-19 years.

ActiLingua Academy is attended by people from more than 30 countries - all continents are represented! Our motivated staff and small international study groups provide an ideal atmosphere for successful language learning. However, your progress depends very much on your own motivation and abilities.
ActiLingua offers 8 different course levels from beginner to advanced. Each course level usually consists of 20 lessons/week (=Standard Course) over a period of 4-8 weeks.

An example: In 12 weeks it is possible to complete A1 and A2 if you are good at languages and work hard.
From this level onwards you can take the internationally recognized exam 'ÖSD Zertifikat A2'.

If you have attended your course regularly (at least 90%), you receive a certificate of participation giving details of the type of course, duration, course level, number of lessons attended and topics covered.

ActiLingua offers tailored preparation courses. For detailed information, please visit Certificate Preparation Course.

ActiLingua offers special examination courses that ideally prepare you for the examinations of the Austrian German Language Diploma (OSD). The success rate of our students is almost 100%. Detailed information on our Certificate Preparation Courses!

Certificate preparation courses are booked and paid after oral assessment directly in Vienna.

Information on OSD-exams: 2 weeks before course start of our exam preparation course, we organise a free lecture and present available exams, their levels and their advantages and help you choose the best suitable exam for your needs and ambitions.

ActiLingua offers tailored preparation courses starting two weeks before the exam: Current starting dates!

Assuming existing German skills, you may start the programme any Monday. Complete beginners have a starting date approx. once a month. No music teaching takes place on public holidays and holidays of the Conservatory. Lessons cannot be subsequently made up.

You can take music lessons with very little knowledge of German. But you must have completed at least B1.1. to attend theory lessons at the Conservatory.

Certificates issued by the Conservatory are recognized world wide as it enjoys official status.

The lecturers and professors of the Vienna Conservatory have very good pedagogical training and are very well qualified in their field. They consider it their duty not only to provide professional musical training, but also to impart their enthusiasm for music-making and to meet the individual needs of every student.

In order to take part in rehearsals of the orchestra or chamber ensemble, you should master your instrument very well and start your programme at the beginning of September. You can take part in a rehearsal of the orchestra or chamber ensemble directly when you arrive in Vienna. The director of the Conservatory decides if your command of the instrument is sufficient to take part in the rehearsal on a regular basis.

The programme is specially focussed on people fond of music, who already master one instrument or devote themselves to singing.

If you would like to use your stay in Vienna to work on your linguistic as well as your musical skills, we can recommend the ActiLingua course German and Music - both to lay music enthusiasts and professionals with advanced musical training. The Conservatory offers highly qualified tuition for all common musical instruments as well as voice training. You will learn the name of your teacher on the first day at the Conservatory.

No, anybody interested in music (playing an instrument or devoted to singing) is welcome to profit from the high-quality practical and theoretical lessons at the Vienna Conservatory. The music school offers all amateur musicians the opportunity to be privately instructed by professionals for their own personal enjoyment. If you are a professional musician or singer yourself, you will be taught by highly-qualified professors of the Vienna Conservatory.

Information on practise facilities are available at the ActiLingua Academy (approx. EUR 2.50 to EUR 7.00 per hour).

It is generally not possible to rent a musical instrument for the duration of your stay. You can always contact a local store and negotiate an individual deal. However, if it is possible we recommend that you bring your own instrument.

Music instruction takes place at the “Vienna Conservatory” which is about 20 minutes from ActiLingua Academy by underground. About 600 students from all over the world study music at the institute. Instruction for music students and professionals and lessons for enthusiastic amateurs are available.

ActiLingua arranges paid work experience for EU students and unpaid work experience for EU and non-EU citizens. The placement starts after a German course of at least eight weeks' duration. EU citizens may work in Austria without a work permit. For details, please refer to German and Work Experience.

The type of job you can do in Austria depends greatly on your knowledge of German. As a general rule, however, your level of German must be relatively high to secure work in Austria.

Fill out the registration form for the German course and the application form for the internship. It is also possible for you to register online and to send your application form with one photo and a CV by email. For German and Work Experience you need to complete two registration forms: Our general online registration form for the preparatory German course and a special registration form for Work Experience which will help us to find a suitable placement for you.

Since your previous education and experience play a significant role in determining whether or not you will be allocated a place on a work experience programme, no specific position, employment location or remuneration can be guaranteed. We do our best to find an appropriate offer. Should no position be found, we will refund EUR 290.00.

Yes, we make an offer for accommodation during your internship, too.

You can collect your job confirmation from our school office 4 weeks before the commencement of employment. It includes precise details of your workplace, starting time and terms. Then, you need to call or arrange an interview with your employer and sign the job confirmation.

In this case we will refund the total payment less EUR 198,00 administration fee. In the case of University Preparation and Enrolment Guidance Programme bookings we will refund the total payment less EUR 628,00 or EUR 788,00.

We recommend to all participants that they take out cancellation insurance which costs 4% of the total amount and has to be paid together with your deposit. The more time you spend in a country the better you will understand it, its people, its culture and, last but not least, its language. The following advantages await you on a longer ActiLingua course:

  • A particularly attractive price: The long-term course is up to 18% cheaper in comparison to the Standard Course! (This reduction is already considered in our pricelist.)
  • Lasting improvement and consolidation of language skills
  • Comprehensive exposure to the culture and character of another country
  • Good working relationship with native speakers and other course participants
  • Making good contacts and friendships.

Our motivated staff and small international study groups provide an ideal atmosphere for successful language learning. However, your progress depends very much on your own motivation and abilities. Generally, each course level consists of 20 lessons/week for 4 - 8 weeks. If you are good at languages and work hard it is possible to complete A1 and A2 in 12 weeks.
If you have attended the course regularly (at least 90%) you receive a certificate of participation stating details like course level, duration and type of course. Optionally, you can take the ActiLingua test and get a grade for the proficiency you have acquired.
If you need your German in official and business situations mostly, it might be a good idea to prepare for an internationally recognized German certificate. ActiLingua Academy is official examination centre for the Austrian German Language Diploma (OSD). You can participate in tailored preparation courses and take a wide selection of internationally recognized exams.

If you have attended your course regularly (at least 90%), you receive a certificate of participation giving details of the type of course, duration, course level, number of lessons attended and topics covered.

If you need official proof of your German level for your job or university studies, we recommend an internationally recognized certificate such as the Austrian German Language Diploma (ÖSD) recognized by the Austrian state. ActiLingua is an official examination centre for ÖSD and offers specialised exam preparation courses, which you can attend in addition to your booked German course.

If you can already speak some German, there are German courses starting every Monday. German courses for complete beginners start once a month: current starting dates..

You have a choice of Host Families, Apartments, ActiLingua Residence and hotel accommodation the whole year round. Student Houses are available in summer.

At the ActiLingua Residence and in Host Families it is possible to book breakfast, half board or self catering (cooking facilities). Our Apartments are equipped with a kitchen in which you will find the most important utensils and crockery. Accommodation at the Student House is available with breakfast or half board.

ActiLingua Residence: Available year round. The apartments are especially comfortable in a tastefully renovated art-deco building ("Jugendstil") typical for Vienna. The school and the city centre are within easy distance and can be reached within 10 minutes by public transport. Quiet location, Gasometer Shopping center nearby. There are two types of apartments available: Standard or Superior

Student House: Available in July and August. You have your own room (single or shared room) in a favourably located student house with rapid access to the city centre. Most rooms feature their own shower, toilet and telephone. You can choose between breakfast and half-board. There's a kitchen where you may use the hotplates and refrigerator free of charge - students must provide their own crockery and utensils.

Apartment: Available year-round. We recommend this type of accommodation if you value your independence. You are accommodated in a well-maintained flat, often shared with other ActiLingua students, in single or shared rooms with shared bathroom and kitchen. You are responsible for your own meals; the flat contains all usual kitchen utensils and crockery. Most flats are also equipped with their own washing machine and TV.

More inofrmation on our accommodation options here!

If you stay at a Host Family half-board includes breakfast and lunch or dinner depending on your course schedule and the Host Family. If you stay at a Student House half-board is always breakfast and dinner.

Usually the distance between the accommodation and the school is approx. 20-30 minutes (maximum of 40 minutes) by public transport.

A soon as we receive the complete amount for the course and accommodation, we will send you the exact address of your accommodation within two working days. Additionally, you will receive a Welcome Letter and a Voucher containing useful pre-arrival information!

Please inform us of any allergies and dietary requirements when you register, your needs will then be taken into account when we allocate you to your accommodation!

In our carefully selected Host Families, well-maintained Student Houses and comfortable Apartments you can choose among shared rooms and single rooms. We do our best to satisfy all your wishes concerning accommodation. Should, contrary to expectations, a type of accommodation be fully booked, we will immediately contact you to offer a suitable alternative and try to work out a solution which meets your requirements.

You share a room with another ActiLingua student who has come to Vienna to learn German. We make every effort to place students of the same age and different nationality together. Of course, you always share a room with a student of the same sex.

In the case of accommodation in Host Families or Apartments, ActiLingua makes every effort to put students of different nationalities and the same age together.

If you would like to stay together with a friend who is also attending an ActiLingua course, then please let us know when you register. We will make every effort to ensure that you are placed together.

Our ActiLingua Residence also serves hotel guests who do not take part in one of our German courses. We are happy to tell you more about our prices. Please contact us for further information!

Alternatively, we recommend that you stay at a hotel or a guesthouse during your German course. Due to the limited number of rooms we are only able to offer accommodation to course participants. If you prefer to hunt for your accommodation yourself, please contact the Vienna Tourist Board.

Should a student, contrary to expectations, be dissatisfied with the accommodation, this should be communicated to the school office in Vienna as soon as possible, however no later than three days after arrival. ActiLingua will then offer a suitable alternative.

ActiLingua Residence: A laundrette service is offered at the Residence (additional costs). A public laundrette is available nearby too. Most Host Families and some Apartments feature washing facilites at cost price. Most Student Houses feature laundrettes. However, as any other metropolis there is a huge number of public laundrettes all over Vienna, which is a good occasion for tuning in on local talk.

Please bring your own towels. Bed linen is provided.

Your room is cleaned weekly. If you have booked accommodation in our ActiLingua Residence your room is cleaned twice weekly (ActiLingua Residence Standard) or even Monday through Friday (ActiLingua Residence Superior). Read more!
Bed linen is changed every two weeks.

Our well looked-after Apartments are generally used to accommodate our course students. An average of one to four, and a maximum of eight, students are accommodated in one apartment. If you book ActiLingua Residence Superior, you will have your own apartment.

The apartments in our ActiLingua Residence feature a fully equipped kitchen.

Kitchens in our Apartments are fully equipped, too.

If you stay with a Host Family you can - after talking to your hosts - use the family's kitchen.

Student House features a kitchen. Students need to bring their own crockery and utensils.

Please note that the location of the Host Family cannot be chosen. The apartments of our Host Families are located in all of Vienna with good connection to public transport. Usually the distance between the accommodation and the school is approx. 20-30 minutes (maximum of 40 minutes) by public transport.

We make every effort to ensure that your stay is as pleasant as possible. Accommodation standards are regularly checked by us. We also ask all our students for feedback after their stay. Our landlords are selected with the following criteria in mind:

  • Closeness to the school (average of 20-30 minutes, max. 40 minutes) by public transport
  • Size, furnishings and fittings in the flat, bathroom facilities and student's room
  • Access to the family's communal areas
  • Weekly cleaning of the flat and check that everything is OK
  • If breakfast or half board is offered, choice of food at breakfast and a three-course hot lunch or dinner
  • Opportunity to get to know family members and any other tenants.

Some of our Host Families are young and childless, some have children who attend school and some are older couples whose children are already grown up and live elsewhere.

Please note that you cannot book a room with a private bathroom and toilet at the Host Family. Students generally share the kitchen, bathroom and toilet with other members of the Host Family. If you wish to book a room with a private bathroom, we recommend our Superior Apartment at the ActiLingua Residence. The Superior Apartment (30-40 m2) is for single use with private kitchen, bathroom and toilet.

We offer about 40 places with host families throughout the year and are currently increasing the number. Some Host Families only accept students that book accommodation and board, others prefer female or younger students. We aim at accommodating the wishes of Host Families and students. It can happen that we do not find a suitable Host Family for the student due to incompatible preferences. In this case we always offer a suitable alternative, i.e. an Apartment or accommodation in the ActiLingua Residence.

Your arrival day is Sunday before course start. Please inform your landlord until Tuesday before the start of the course of your exact arrival time. All participants need to register on their first day (Monday) at the school office at 08:30 am.
If we have received the assessment test until Tuesday before course start you are assigned to your course level after a short oral assessment talk. Afterwards, you will learn your course level and schedule (morning or afternoon).
If not, you need to fill in the written assessment test then. This might lead to you missing your first day in class!

Our Host Families will explain the easiest and fastest way to school in all detail and show you on the city map. Then you set out for school independently.

Every course includes 5 lessons/week of cultural and special interest programme. We organize special talks, discussions and videos about Austrian music, art, literature, history and architecture. Films, tours of the many sights of Vienna, parties and sports all form part of the programme.

To broaden your Austrian horizons, we also organize trips at cost price to places in the environs of Vienna and further afield. For instance, you can join us on a trip to Salzburg, the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Graz, the "green heart of Austria" , Budapest, the capital city of Hungary , medieval Klosterneuburg or the famous Wachau region in the Danube valley! If you are doing a course in the summer, you can take a dip in the magnificent Lake Neusiedl or savour Austrian wine at a traditional "Heuriger" wine tavern in one of the finest wine-growing areas. City walks, special interest lectures on Vienna's art, literature, architecture and history, a Waltzing course and a hands-on introduction to Viennese cuisine are some of the highlights of our leisure programme. You can find the programme and more information on activities on our blog.

Our cultural and special interest programme mostly takes place in German. According to our teaching methods German is used exclusively with total beginners, too. We include diverse images and demonstrative graphics to support understanding. For some programmes English language handouts are available on request.

Vienna offers a wide range of activities in every season for sport lovers. The following section provides you with a general picture of the sorts of activities on offer. For further information please consult our comprehensive student manual which will be handed to you at the start of your course.

Swimming

Vienna has over forty public and private indoor and open-air pools all of which are in immaculate condition and kept very clean. The wonderful Amalienbad and the Erlebnisbad Margareten with its giant water slide, sauna and wild water rapids are both worth a visit. In the summer you can soak up the sun in the midst of an Italian Riviera atmosphere on the Danube Island or settle down for the day at the Krapfenwaldbad and enjoy its spectacular hilltop view of Vienna. Information on all public swimming pools can be found at public baths in Vienna..

Fitness, Tennis and Squash

For fitness fans Club Danube has the answer. It offers everything your heart desires: tennis, squash, badminton, aerobics and much more. There are 12 branches throughout Vienna, with the headquarters at Franzosengraben (U3 -Erdberg terminus). Fitnessclub Heimlich is just around the corner from our school. Students can attend aerobic and other fitness classes at a reduced rate upon production of an ActiLingua Card.

Ice Skating

In the cold winter months we can recommend the Wiener Eislaufverein ice-rink. It is one of the largest artificial rinks in the world, covering 6,200 sqm. Skates can, of course, be hired. The outdoor ice-rink in front of Vienna's City Hall is great fun and can be enjoyed throughout January and February. Skate on the rink and enjoy the city hall's fairytale lights. Those who find skating on an artificial surface too boring can take a trip to the picturesque Lake Neusiedl. When the ice is thick enough, it is magically converted into one of Europe's largest natural ice rinks!

Bicycle amd skate hire

The numerous cycle paths and the Danube Island are perfect for roller skating, inline skating and cycling. Equipment can be hired from Rad- und Skaterverleih 2000 on the Danube Island (Copa Cagrana) at a reduced rate with the ActiLingua Card.

Skiing

If you are in Austria for the winter you should definitely not miss out on a ski trip. You can practice your skiing at Hohe Wand-Wiese. Semmering - Stuhleck, 113km from Vienna offers yet more opportunities to try out your skiing, featuring cross country trails, toboggan runs and a multitude of beautiful hiking trails as well as pistes to suit all abilities. Skis, snowboards, boots and poles can be hired next to the skilifts.

German instruction takes place from Monday to Friday. You are entirely free to make plans for the weekends and discover Austria on your own. If you prefer to discover Austria with your school mates we offer weekly excursions to favourite destinations (Salzburg, Wachau region, lake Neusiedl or even Budapest) at cost price. For longer trips we recommend that you go before or after the German course.

Vienna is the ideal place to learn German! The Austrian capital combines the convenience of a modern cosmopolitan city with the imperial charm and flair of bygone years. It boasts outstanding infrastructure, is clean and safe, and has all the inspiration you could wish for on a language course. The monuments to its rich history and imperial past capture the imagination of history lovers. Music and art fans swarm to the city, and its vibrant social scene provides fun and entertainment - off the beaten track too. Take a look at our Guide to Vienna and check out Vienna's attractions for yourself!

As is the case with all languages, German has its regional variations, particularly in the way it is spoken. The German speaking territory can be divided into two linguistic areas - Northern German and Southern German. Austria is in the Southern German area. All over the world there are people whose spoken language is different from the standard version and Vienna is no exception. Dialect is not spoken any more or any less here than in other German speaking towns. The German spoken in Austria is pure and melodious, and is regarded by many experts to be the most correct form of the language. At ActiLingua Academy you learn standard German according to a recognized curriculum.

Vienna is one of the safest capital cities in the world. An excellent public transport network of underground trains, trams and buses that extends into the suburbs carries you quickly to your destination from early morning until late at night. You can travel almost all over the city in safety at night too. Vienna boasts all the convenience of a European capital city, but has managed to remain free of the frequently associated dangers of metropolitan life. The friendly atmosphere of calm and "Gemütlichkeit" which the Viennese have elevated to a kind of philosophy runs through the whole city and makes visitors feel at home very quickly.

Austria's climate is generally moderate and mild. Average summer temperatures range from 20°C to 30°C, the average winter temperature is around 0°C. Vienna is exposed to the warm and dry Pannonian climate and the raw Alpine climate so the temperature and weather conditions tend toward extremes. Above-average temperatures or sharp drops in temperature can occur at any time of year. If you come to us in the summer, we recommend that you bring swim wear, waterproofs and a light jacket just to be on the safe side! In the winter, warm clothing and sturdy, waterproof footwear is essential even if blazing sunshine and positive temperatures are forecast for the duration of your stay. Up-to-date weather reports can be found at http://www.wetter.at and at Weather.com.

As well as being in the middle of Europe, Vienna is also in the middle in terms of prices. Since joining the European Union, basic food costs have come into line with those in the rest of the European Union. Products available in the Austria federal capital originate from all over Europe. You will find a wide variety of clothing, textiles, furniture and food products, on sale in open-air markets and modern shopping malls, as well as a host of typical Austrian souvenirs. Vienna is not a particularly cheap tourist destination in European terms, but visitors find it a great place to shop. Food and drink comes in all price categories. There are numerous inexpensive pubs serving good local and international dishes. Main meals cost an average of between EUR 5.00-7.00. Beverages cost between EUR 2.00-4.00. Naturally, you will also find upmarket restaurants in higher price brackets (particularly in the inner city). Here you have to budget for between EUR 11.00-18.00 for a main meal. A good bottle of wine costs EUR 10 upwards.

It goes without saying that food and drink is cheaper at the supermarket: a litre of wine costs as little as EUR 2.50, a can of beer from EUR 0.50, 1 kg of bread approx. EUR 2.00 and a frozen pizza an average of EUR 2.50. Websites of some Austrian supermarket chains:

Free parking spaces can be found throughout the districts 10,11,13,18,19 and 21-23. Careful: Not all parking spaces are free, short term parking zones are marked in special colours. It is also possible to park in one of the many underground car parks. The Technical University underground car park in Operngasse, 1010 Vienna, for instance, costs approx. EUR 3.50 per hour.
