Experience a magical Christmas world
The cold November days usher in one of our favourite leisure activities: visiting Christmas markets. Whether chic and loud or small and contemplative, there is one for every taste.
The scent of punch and mulled wine lingers over the markets and competes with doughnuts and gingerbread. At this time of the year, Vienna’s squares transform into magical Christmas markets. Here is our list of 5 Christmas markets you must visit:
1. Rathausplatz
If you only visit one Christmas market, it ought to be this one. The “Christkindlmarkt” is located on the square in front of Vienna’s Town Hall. Highlights are the big Christmas tree and probably the biggest Advent calendar of Austria: the Town Hall itself! Of course, many culinary discoveries await you. Don’t forget to look out for the decorated trees: the “Kasperl tree”, the “Herzerlbaum” (Hearts tree) or the “Post office in the clouds”. They offer a perfect setting for a souvenir photo ;)
2. Schönbrunn Palace
You might know Schönbrunn Palace as the former summer residence of the Austrian Emperors. But, it’s worth visiting in winter too: It provides a spectacular backdrop for an idyllic Christmas village. To spread even more Christmas spirit, festive concerts take place almost every day during advent season.
3. Spittelberg
Our personal favourite Christmas market in Vienna is located at the Spittelberg. In this lovely historical quarter, both traditional and original handicraft is sold. Explore narrow alleyways, niches and courtyards. Also, seize the opportunity to do some Christmas shopping!
4. Altwiener Weihnachtsmarkt
You will find traditional handicraft at this Christmas market at the Freyung. Discover wooden toys, self-made candles and beautiful ceramics. The atmosphere spreads festive cheer all around!
5. Karlsplatz
Another highlight on Vienna’s Christmas market scene is found at Karlsplatz. Meet with your friends and drink some mulled wine. Enjoy the beautiful backdrop: the Karlskirche. Live music, fire acrobatics and a “live crib” with real animals ensure a unique experience!
