A typical austrian breakfast
Breakfast is supposed to be the most important meal of the day. That’s because an ample breakfast provides you with energy for your day and even helps you studying! We made a little summary on what an Austrian breakfast looks like.
Breakfast habits
Austrians like having breakfast but they are not very demanding. Especially on work days their breakfast is rather small. One thing that mustn’t be missing is “Schwarzbrot”, a black bread made of rye and wheat flour. But other bread rolls like “Kornspitz” or “Semmel” are popular too – especially on weekends. Sometimes we also eat a “Mehlspeise”.
Austrians prefer a sweet breakfast and like to eat their bread with butter and jam. But some people rather eat a savoury breakfast with ham and cheese. The most popular beverage, by the way, is coffee, closely followed by tea!
Having breakfast in a coffee house
On weekends the Austrians love to take some time for breakfast and meet with friends at a coffee house. One dish you’ll find on almost every menu is “Wiener Frühstück” which means “Viennese Breakfast”. It usually consists of:
- coffee or tea
- a bread roll or croissant
- butter
- honey or jam
It can vary a bit from restaurant to restaurant, so better have a look at the menu! There are savoury breakfast meals and healthy options with yoghurt and brown bread as well.
What is also never missing on any breakfast table in Austria are cocoa, vegetables (such as sweet peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes) and eggs. There are different types of preparation for the eggs: from the scrambled eggs, through the egg sunny side up to the soft-boiled egg, Everything is included in the breakfast menu. In many restaurants, bacon is also served with scrambled eggs.
